Goodbye Pond!

Hello family and friends (one last time!), We can’t believe our experience with Queen’s Health Outreach in Pond Inlet has come to a close…these past few days have been spent tying up loose ends and saying some hard goodbyes to the people and places we have grown to love so much here! Here are some important bits of our last few days in Pond inlet: Daytimes this week were spent meeting with some important members of the community. We hope […]

Blizzards, Beaches & Balloons

Hello family and friends!   Our official QHO teaching is now complete! It has been a busy week of tying up loose ends and running special afterschool events. We most definitely spoke too soon with our “Spring has Sprung” post of last week- there has been LOTS of snow since then, making Pond Inlet quite snow-covered once again! This week in the classroom, mornings were spent with a group of students in grade ten at Nasivvik. As these students have […]

Spring has sprung in Pond!

Hi family and friends,   We hope you are all enjoying the beginnings of summer wherever you find yourselves. Spring has sprung in pond! It is DEFINITELY much warmer and sunnier than when we arrived just a mere few weeks ago. The following is a recap of the past week and all of the things we have gotten up to:   The mornings this week were spent at Ulaajuk, the elementary school here in Pond Inlet, which teaches students from […]

Happy Long Weekend from Pond!

Hello family and friends!   We hope that you have had a beautiful long weekend whether you are travelling, in the city or at the cottage.   We are officially half-way through our project in Pond Inlet! We cannot believe how fast it has flown by. Although we have lots to share, here are the top 10 things we have learned so far about our arctic home:   1)   It is pronounced “noon-ah-voot” not “Nun-Ah-Vut.” As our students constantly remind […]

The Cold Never Bothered Us Anyways

Hello family and friends! We’ve been pretty busy at school this past week – introducing new topics, keeping busy with after school activities and continuing to plan for upcoming events! Last week we started a unit on healthy relationships with the grade 9 students and with a group of the grade 12 students. This involved lessons on anger management, abuse, trust and overall, how to build and keep healthy relationships in all aspects of life. The lessons were well received […]

…And that’s just the tip of the iceberg!

Hello family and friends,   We just finished a weekend that was full of adventure! Saturday morning began when we shared a delicious breakfast of crepes with our lovely hosts Pat and Juana. Then we were off to see the iceberg. We first saw the iceberg from the plane last Sunday, and we have been eager to visit ever since!   This Saturday was also the much anticipated dog race. We were incredibly lucky to witness this important cultural event. […]

FIRST WEEK….Check ✓

Hi family and friends, we are just sitting here wondering where to begin! This week has been quite the whirlwind and we have so much to tell. Here is a look at what we have been up to since we last posted:   The week began with some meetings with some of our QHO contacts in the community including Shelly at the Arctic College and some of the nurses at the nursing station. By talking with them and discussing ideas […]

Welcome to Pond!

Hello Again! Well, let’s just say we have had quite the adventure already – we have already fallen in love with Nunavut! 🙂 Yesterday, our day began at the Ottawa airport. By some miracle, none of our bags were overweight (and trust us this was VERY surprising). We left the 10 degree weather in Ottawa for the -15 degree tundra in Iqaluit. Needless to say, we were rocking some heavy winter boots, jackets and sweaters in preparation. The further north […]

Next Stop… Nunavut

Hello family, friends and followers! Welcome to our first blog post! Tomorrow morning we leave for Pond Inlet and could not be more excited. We have spent the past week getting together all of our materials for project- from Frisbees to heavy jackets and A LOT of food. Food can get expensive up north so let’s just say that we wanted to take up as much as possible. This lead to a car filled to the brim for our drive […]
