Mish Week 5: Wall Tents, Community Events & Time Well Spent

Team Mish back again with another update coming to you live from the top end of the 51st parallel. Once again, this post is packed with  a week’s worth of action so hold on tight. This whole blog-writing thing has actually proved to be a great opportunity to sit down and reflect on the happenings, tomfoolery and monkey business in which we are immersed each week. So, if you have any monkey business of your own and a couple spare […]

Another week, another walleye

Hello, hello! Man, time is weird concept here in Pickle Lake. Everything seems slow and comfortable (aka Pickle Lake Time), but we are simultaneously finding ourselves running out of it so quickly! Only 1.5 weeks left in this lovely town. We did a lot more teaching this week, especially with the younger kids. Some favourite moments were: Teaching hygiene to the Kindergarten Class. We learned how to wash our hands properly, as well as cough and sneeze into our sleeve. […]

Mish Week 3 & 4: Foods of the Land, a Boy Becomes a Man and the Dodge Caravan

And we’re back with another Team Mish update…as they say, better late than never. Sorry that we’ve been less than prompt with our updates but bear with me, this one’s juicy. The past two weeks have been full of action, leaving little time for self-reflection, let alone an occasion to weave together the intricate tapestry that is colloquially referred to as blog-writing. First and foremost, we would like to extend a much delayed but equally eager Happy Mother’s Day wish […]

Sometimes the Detour is the Destination

It is the end of yet another busy week in Pickle Lake, full of teaching, dodgeball, Mother’s Day, road trips, campfires and – unfortunately – the stomach flu. One thing we have not been busy doing though, is blogging, so hopefully you can bear with us as we jump all the way back to last weekend… Saturday we got to experience our first ever Pickle Lake Community Dance and man, do these folks know how to have a good time! […]

Fabulous Firsts

From teaching to touring, movies and makeovers, as well as crafts and cooking, there is never a dull moment in Pickle Lake! A lot of learning happened at Crolancia this week – both from us and by us.  We have spent a good deal of time hanging out with the kids, getting to know what sorts of things they are interested in and where they come from. And, after so many lessons, we are starting to get a good feel […]

Pickle and Mish Week 2: Cupcakes and Cosmetic Mistakes

Girls Night 4 hours, 27 girls and countless bottles of glitter glue later, we have successfully pulled off the most anticipated event of our stay – Girls Night. Team Pickle and Team Mish collaborated to bring together girls in grades 1-4 from Crolancia and Missabay. It was a night full of laughter and fun, as well as plenty of food, crafts, dancing and makeup. Many of the girls had not met each other before so we started out by having […]

Mish Week 2: Unfortunate Names and Playground Games

We’re happy to announce that as of Monday, we have officially started our lessons with the children at Missabay Community School in Mishkeegogamang. We’ve decided to change it up a little bit this year and begin with the leadership, goal-setting, and responsibility component of our curriculum. We think this will allow us to get to know the kids a little better and also hopefully foster attitudes of leadership and motivation within the classroom. This year we are trying to teach […]

Sports, Sunsets and Sorcery

We are quickly learning that despite the size of this town, Pickle Lake is a hustling and bustling place.  This past week alone, we joined in on volleyball, dodgeball and floor hockey games, as well as breakfast club, knitting club and girls club. Lindsey has proved her skills in all things athletic, and even has the battle scars to prove it. Sandra also has some scars, but of a different sort (think falling off the playground “America’s Funniest Home Videos” […]

Pickle and Mish: Souvenirs and Shifting Gears

We’re now four days into project and things are really starting to come together. Despite Missabay (the school in Mishkeegogamang) being shut down for the week due to a water issue, we’ve already had the chance to become involved in both Mish and Pickle Lake. We’ve had some beautiful sunny weather appropriately balanced out by torrential downpour and some light flurries. In our time here so far we have had the opportunity to meet with many wonderful and inspiring people. […]
