Pickle Lake and Mishkeegogamang

Past the halfway point?!

Happy Victoria Day weekend everyone! Mother Nature has been keeping us on our toes this weekend. Yesterday we enjoyed clear skies, sunshine and twenty-degree weather. This morning we woke to freezing rain, a winter storm warning and tomorrow’s forecast of snow (20 cm). I guess that’s Northern Ontario for ya! Once again we had a great week at both schools and we’re really starting to get to know the kids. The week started off at Missabay where we were teaching […]

First full week of teaching!

Another busy week for the books! We were at Missabay on Monday introducing ourselves to each of the classrooms, getting more and more excited to get to know the kids better. By Tuesday morning we were back helping with breakfast club at Crolancia, excited for our first full day of teaching. This week at Crolancia we worked on self-esteem with the 4/5/6’s and started building our wall of self-esteem, each brick represents something the students feel confident about, or a […]

Where did the first week go?!

Long time no blog! It’s been a busy week (and I’m sure it will only get busier)- here’s a recap of our first week here in Pickle Lake!! Monday morning was…emotional. We were so excited to pick up our final supplies, get to Pickle Lake and meet everyone, but sad to say goodbye to the Web girls, uncertain whether we had everything we needed and there was also the concern about whether their questionably heavy hockey bag of food would […]

Next stop: Pickle Lake!

Good Morning from Thunder Bay!! I know we said the next post would be from Pickle Lake, but we just had such a wonderful day yesterday we wanted to share! We woke up bright and early, and left the Lapp’s beautiful home in Huntsville! We are so grateful for their incredible hospitality. After enjoying a great breakfast we filled the tank and took to the open road. With Katie behind the wheel we were cruising to Sudbury, singing along and […]

Week 5 Going On Week 6… Where did the time go?

As the end of project comes closer and closer, we can’t help but think of all the ups and downs that have happened along the way. Last week, we were sad to learn that school was cancelled Monday to Wednesday but happy to have the opportunity to visit the smaller satellite communities around the reserve. Each day we visited Eric Lake, Ten Houses, and the main reserve to play on the playground, toss around the soccer ball, and just have […]

Week 5… Warm Weather, Cold Water!

Hello everybody! Hope all is well back at home! We have a few adventures to update you on, as well as a few pictures of the beautiful weather we’ve had up in Pickle Lake! After our very successful girls night, of course we had to host an even crazier boys night! Boys night consisted of some indoor floor hockey as well as an activity relay race where they had to put their different skills to the test. Foul shots followed […]

Fish, Bears, and the Great Big North

Hey everyone! Long time, no blog, but we’re back and ready to tell you what we’ve been up to the last two weeks! We’ve finished off our third and fourth weeks of teaching, covering puberty, sexual health, and healthy relationships with the grades 4-8. This is always a fun time, as the kids are super interested in learning about changes going on in their own bodies as well as their peers of the opposite sex. With the younger grades, we’ve […]
