Au revoir, Salluit!

Though we are enjoying the warm Kingston weather and sun, it was very hard to say goodbye to Salluit. We have both had such amazing experiences here, and we have learned and grown so much in the process! We couldn’t be more grateful for the time that we had in this community. For our last week of teaching in Salluit, we had the opportunity to teach lessons at the elementary school, called Pigiurvik School. We went in to see the […]

Who knew you could do so much in a week?! :)

The Monday of this week was Victoria Day, which means no school! With our free day we decided to go on a hike up to the highest mountain point overlooking Salluit, with some of the teachers from school. Though it was extremely windy, the view from the top was spectacular! At our last run club meet, we had asked students whether they wanted to meet on this Monday for our next run club even though it was a holiday. And […]

Goodbye for now Webequie!

Our last half-week in Webequie was absolutely amazing! We could not have asked for a better way to wrap up our lessons and to say our final goodbyes. On Monday, we were able to teach lessons about goal setting and how to set SMART goals. In our high school classes on Monday and Tuesday we taught lessons about mental health, stigma around mental illness and the importance of self-care. The students set some great goals in their lives and made […]

Week 6: 4846 km and 42 days later

This is it! After six wild and thrilling weeks, we have completed our initiative in Fort Providence, Northwest Territories! In our final week, we had the pleasure of teaching in every classroom at Deh Gah School, which meant we often taught five to seven classes a day, keeping us very busy. In our older classes we focused on sexual health and puberty, covering topics such as physical and emotional changes, protection, STIs, pregnancy, consent, and more. As always, our 7-12s […]

Camping & Kids & Craziness

Oops, we were so busy having fun that we forgot to post a blog! This past week was filled with tons of adventures. We had Puberty and Safe Sex week with our older classes, with discussions on growing up, consent, safe sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity. They listened super attentively and had the chance to ask any questions they wanted to. Younger students that had missed these lessons earlier, learned about healthy eating and tooth brushing. Our after school […]

Fairs and Campfires! – Week #4

Victoria day in Webequie sure was a blast despite the rainy weather! Unfortunately we weren’t able to join in on the treasure hunt and cookout that the community had put on together in the afternnon, but we were able to join in on the festivities during the night, which included an all-ages dance! We were very impressed by the talent of people of all ages and the shuffling skills that even the kindergarteners seemed to have mastered! Many of the […]

One week left in Pond!

Hey everyone! Just wanted to you begin by thanking you all for following our journey thus far. Where has the time gone? We simply cannot believe that our time in Pond will be coming to an end in just 7 short days. After a relaxing long weekend, we started fresh on Monday by teaching a lesson on Nutrition to our Grade 7A class. We followed this with lessons on Sleep Health (Wednesday) and Hygiene (Thursday). On Thursday, we decided to […]

Time flies when you’re having fun! (Spoiler: we are!)

What an exciting week! Our classroom lessons were centred on mental health for all classes. For older students, this meant learning about what mental health is, an overview of mental illness, and a thorough discussion of coping strategies.Younger students discussed bullying. Tuesday night was Girls’ Night at Missabay! So much fun! We played basketball and the balloon game, ate breakfast for supper, decorated cupcakes, and painted nails. The girls all seemed to have a blast! Thank you to Tommy, […]
