Braids, Bananas, and Bannock

Another week, another blog post! This past week has been the halfway point of our initiative, which is crazy to think about. Crazy that we’ve already been in Pond for three weeks, but also crazy that we’ve only been in Pond for three weeks. We’re still so excited about everything we’ve done, all we’ve taught, everyone we’ve met, and we can’t wait to see what the upcoming weeks will bring. We started this week at Nasivvik High School with a […]

Lonnng Weekends in Webequie!

Hello dedicated blog followers!! Sarah and Jamie are back & ready to fill you all in since last Sunday! We started off last week in the classroom by delving into puberty with the grades 4’s and 5’s. We were able to split up the classes into boys and girls, with Sarah leading conversations with the girls and Jamie with the boys. These lessons were open and honest and filled with giggles and questions, and we were both super happy with how […]

Week 3: Sleep Lessons and Volleyball

Welcome back to our blog!!! This week we started off in the classrooms teaching about sleep benefits, and tips to get a better nights sleep. This was the most requested topic from our student surveys and one that adults stressed to us as well! It’s nearly 24 hours of sunlight here right now, so you can imagine how easy it is to stay up all hours of the night without darkness telling your body it’s time to shut down. We […]

We played some really fun games outside the classroom with kids […]

With our younger students, we focused on what goes in a cigarette, activities that we can do instead of smoking, and the idea of peer pressure. We loved hearing all of the fun activities that students liked to do with their friends and family, and they just keep impressing us with their […]

Week 2: bannock, beading and sun burns!!

Hey everyone! This week flew by!! We had the opportunity to do so many amazing things that we learned so so much from! The classrooms this week were full of energy and we continued to develop some great peer to peer relationships. On Wednesday, we had the opportunity to go to spring camp with the K-1 class and had a blast! Spring camp is when each class spends a week on the land learning traditional practices! We had so much […]

Week TWO!!!

And just like that we’re back again after another busy week! Time truly is FLYING. In the younger classrooms this past week we continued to focus on healthy eating and also introduced body parts and the concept of consent. The kids loved seeing Jamie trace and draw out a life-size Sarah on construction paper, especially when her hands were out of proportion to her head! With the older classes (grade 6,7,8s) we discussed substances and substance abuse, as well as […]

Week 2 = Progress !!

Hello all! It’s your Sal Pals here with an update on our second week!! This has been a busy week of nutrition lessons in the classroom. We had our first lessons at the Youth Rehab Centre, and then continued throughout the week with lessons at Pigiurivik Elementary School and Ikusik High School. In the younger grades, we focused a lot on recognizing the difference between healthy and unhealthy foods and our four food groups. They made us lots of beautiful […]
