Are you guys brother and sister? Boyfriend and girlfriend? Mother and son?

Hello friends! It’s been a fun and exciting few days here in Res olute! Full days packed with new faces, inspiring discussions, and kids with limitless energy. Andrew and Andrea, who are typical night-owls, find themselves exhausted by 8pm. Upon arrival, we had heard word from the children that the Breakfast Club at Qarmartalik (the elementary/high school) was the place to be at 8:30am—which was great to hear!! So Friday morning, that’s where Andrew and Andrea were headed, grins broad, ready […]

Salluit at Last!

After finally arriving in Salluit on Wednesday evening, we have had an amazing first week getting to know the town! We have gotten to know all of the teachers at Ikusik (the secondary school), who are incredibly welcoming and enthusiastic about our lessons starting next week. The kids are all very shy and curious about us and we can’t wait to get to know them more as we start teaching! We’ve also met with the principle at Pigiurvik (the primary […]

Happy Mother’s Day, from Pickle Lake, Ontario!

Firstly, we want to wish all our Moms a Happy Mother’s Day! Without you all, us four would quite literally not exist. Thank you for your love and support, allowing each of us to follow our passions, as we continue on this experience we call QHO. We love you all and miss you dearly. Friday began like any other day. Both dynamic duos headed to their schools, eager to finish off the first week on a high note. Michaela and […]

At least the kids are honest…

In the middle of our classic blog brainstorming session while washing dishes, our ingenious thoughts were interrupted by the sound of children’s stomping feet, shortly followed by the whaling of the fire alarm. When the children were asked by the Northern Store manager what they were doing outside, they responded, “we pulled the fire alarm!” … we appreciate their honesty. When we tried to give them an important life lesson about not pulling fire alarms when there is no emergency, […]

Bienvenue…Puvirnituq?

We have had little Internet service for the past couple days and haven’t been able to post, but here is what we’ve been up too! A slight detour in our flight to Salluit on Tuesday turned into a surprise stay in Puvirnituq! Because of high winds (90km/hr!), our flight was grounded in this small town with no indication of for how long. Luckily, we had plenty of dried lentils to live off of during our mini-vacation- yum! On our flight […]

Hi Yemma! Hi Yemma!

Hello dear friends! Glad to know although it feels like another world up here, you know you’re still in Canada when you can hear hockey blaring on the TV and see little kids shooting a puck around on the pond outside Alice’s house. They really do play all night! The busy house has cleared our for the weekend as everyone has gone off on a 5 hour skidoo ride/seal hunt to the cabin for the weekend. I’m sure much of […]

Warm Greetings from a Cold Climate

For 216 days we have been perspiring sweat, blood and tears preparing ourselves for our eventful trip north. In 215 seconds we were left befuddled at what kids these days considered “sick” (cool was so yesterday). Ok, so maybe not the most dramatic series of events leading up to our trip to Resolute Bay but it really just goes to show that no matter how prepared you think you are, it’s the little things that always inevitably make you cock […]

“Wear warm clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty and rubber boots. I’ll pick you up at 7:30 and I’ll explain later.”

After a candlelit move-in, we woke up to our first morning in Pickle Lake, which was bright and sunny. Our foursome split in half as Eric and Michaela went off to Mish, and Kelsey and Jess headed off to Crolancia. Both groups were met with warm greetings from the teachers and various community members. The excitement from the younger children was heart-warming as Jess and Kelsey became covered with baby koala bear children that were absolutely wonderful and a whole […]

Pondward Bound!!

We are now sitting on the floor of the living room of the one and only Alice Panipakoocho! Quite a journey getting here, from a lovely car ride being forced to listen to Ellie’s mom’s boyfriend’s country beats to propeller planes and skidoos! Ellie and her mom arrived in Kingston early Monday afternoon to pick up Emma and hit up to infamous institution that is Costco. We quickly discovered that one should go to Costco with an open mind, not […]

Spring is in the air and the wolf pack can smell it…

Things have heated up in Webequie, and we are not talking about the weather. Yes folks, the dogs/wolves are in heat. Keep all single canines and females alike, locked up. Our wolf pack woes continue as they now serenade us with howls as we sprint past them on our run. As we are fearing for our safety from the wolf pack, we have legitimately become best friends with our neighbour Bryan (some wishes do come true girls). Also note, Bryan […]
