“What rhymes with uterus?” We’re not very good at blog titles…

Our second weekend in Salluit was tiring and exciting! We were pumped to set up a table at the garage sale on Saturday at Pigiurvik, with info about QHO, Canada’s Food Guide, food labels and more. Sadly, as beautiful as our posters were, there were only three families to see them. Apparently, the garage sale was not as happening a place as we’d expected…however we were very excited when one of the parents looked at our posters, and even took […]

Do you enjoy hangliding? Michaela, are you flexible?

As we write this, we are sitting baking in the sun, enjoying the 20 plus weather that Pickle Lake has been dealing out this week. Jessica has already acquired slightly redder skin, but nothing a little Aloe can’t heal. We’ve all jumped into our second week of teaching rejuvenated from last week’s teaching successes and our eventful weekend!  Friday night we hosted our first Friday Fun Night for the kids at the community hall. While Jessica and Kelsey manned the […]

“You eat turgid! You eat ham!”

The above title is what happens when you tell some grade 6’s at walking club what your teaching partner is scared of.  Yes, Emma is scared of the word turgid, and the kids thought it was something edible. Luckily our first night of walking club included many other hilarious and wonderful chats with the 7 kids who joined us! Funny how you pick them up as you go. Monday was a hard day of teaching as we dove into some […]

I can’t cook… Me neither… Let’s have a feast!

Every time you do something for the first time, it’s a learning process. Every time you do something with kids for the first time, it’s a recovery process. We consider ourselves pretty active individuals; Andrea runs, does yoga and plays ultimate while being the object of every girl’s dreams keeps Andrew on his toes. However we both agree that teaching kids can make even the most gruelling of physical activities seem like a stroll in the park. And we wouldn’t […]

Salluit is blowing us away! (Literally!)

After a 4 day hiatus, the dynamic duo is back and more injured than ever (intrigued? keep reading). Salluit continues to blow us away, both literally (see picture below) and figuratively… We’ve had a jam-packed week at the secondary school, Ikusik, having paid a visit to a class during every period this week. To recap, this week we covered Physical Health, which included Hygiene, Nutrition, Diabetes, Safety and Physical Fitness. Between homemade trail mix, full body diagrams named “Diabilly” for […]

The Salluit Sistazz Settle In

We can’t believe we’ve already been here for more than a week! Time flies when you are running around all day with classes here, meetings there and after school activities. In the past couple days we’ve started teaching at Ikusik, the secondary school, and Pigiurvik, the elementary school. We have been teaching hygiene, safety, nutrition, and physical activity. We’ve been practicing the hand washing steps (hands are getting really dry!), teeth brushing and flossing (my dentist would be proud!) for […]

“Guys, I think we need to calibrate the scale.” Or maybe we should start to heed the advice of our own nutrition kits…

We are pleased to update that our foursome will be helping out with and planning numerous events within the community, including a guardian/student Sunday walking club, Friday Fun nights at the Community Hall, a Crolancia and Missabay girls’ night, an interschool sport’s day and much more to come.     As per usual, Michaela tossed her luxurious leopard print snuggie aside to greet day 7 with enthusiasm as she and Eric headed to Mish early that morning. However, little did she […]

Diabetes with our Sweeties!!

Sorry all, this post should have been up a couple days ago-silly internet!! Pond Greetings! We have had a wildly wonderful past five days, beginning with relaxing yet productive weekend and busy and fun first few days of teaching!! Saturday was our day of exploration! We were on a quest for the infamous garbage dump which Sarah and Emily spoke so fondly of. For two hours we tromped around, first down to the beach where the view of the mountains […]

4 tampons, 3 lubricated condoms and 2 wooden penises…its Sexual Health Week in Webequie!

The wolf pack holds strong. Late Sunday Afternoon: silence in the kitchen. Meagan angrily uses all of her elbow grease to scrape the burned remnants off the bottom of the pot, while Sarah stands in silence dish-rag in hand. Hilary, demoted to laundry in the bathtub… 3 hours earlier…Hilary enthusiastically offered to put her savy culinary skills to work by making a chili that would last us the week. Meagan and Sarah, overjoyed with the offer, continued prepping lessons as […]

“I broke a kid’s arm in 7 places cause I threw the ball too hard”

It was Monday. For those of you unaware, that’s the day that follows those 2 days where you tell yourself you’re going to be really productive and finish the things you had been putting off during the week only to realize that it’s dinner and you haven’t even finished your witty facebook post about how unproductive the previous day was (this of course didn’t happen to us as pointed out in the previous post). It’s also the day associated with […]
