Pickle Lake: Cupcakes, Snow and How-to-say-No!

Where have the Pickle Lakers been all this time you ask? Not to worry, we can fill you in! We are four weeks into our stay in the lovely town at the end of the highway. It is crazy to think we have only two more weeks left here, and so many more things to do! We have been running around for the past two weeks gearing up for Girl’s Nights, road tripping to Powwows, fishing, and lesson planning for […]

S’mores & Snow Storms

We’ve had a jammed packed long weekend and short week since we last posted! Friday, we kicked off the long weekend with a fun night of Bingo. Unfortunately, we didn’t win anything but the plenty of smiles and laughs made up for that. The host generously announced our Victoria Day Long Weekend Activities in both English and Oji-Cree… And with that, the weekend began! Saturday’s heavy rains proved too much of a challenge for us to overcome. After calling everyone […]

Veggies and Fruit in the North? It’s True!!

Well we have officially completed two full weeks of teaching at Nasivvik High school, and this week was definitely a full one! To complement our lessons on physical health last week, this week’s focus was more mental health related, and then finished up with some introductions to substance abuse. We started off the week heading to the Health Center early Monday morning before school. We were able to meet with a community health outreach worker, Apphia, who gave us really […]

FOR FREE?!?!?!

The Salluit crew is back from their first hike in Salluit! Wowee the views are gorgeous! If only one of us had any photography skills then you would get to see what we saw… Nevertheless we’re going to make you look at our poorly photographed landscapes, so you can try to see the beauty beyond the blurry! This week was Sexual health week! We spent our week talking about Sex, Pregnancy, Menstruation, Puberty, Contraception, and Healthy Relationships. The kids have […]

Holy liffft! (new fav saying compliments of Paula B)

It’s a 5-day weekend here in Webequie and we’re crossing our fingers for some nice weather! Despite some water pipe problems and school being cancelled, we had a very productive Thursday.  We had the pleasure of meeting John Stradiotto at the Career Fair. John is a teacher with WAHSA, a distance education program that enables students to complete their high school diploma from home. Like other WAHSA courses, John’s lectures broadcast all over Northwestern Ontario so students can tune in […]

Weeks 2 & 3!

Hard to believe it’s week 3 here in Webequie – time is flying! Last week, we taught sexual health and healthy relationships in the school. We used “The Game of Life: Puberty Edition” to teach all the children about the changes our body goes through physically and emotionally during puberty. We also had many fun demonstrations, such as the condom demonstration that was very popular. Power outages on the Tuesday and Wednesday forced us to think of creative ways to […]

Goodbye Trail Mix…yes, we bought the one with M&M’s (…yes, we know we deceived you Ellie)

Reba, who also goes by the tall one and who was told her eyelashes were so long and pretty and Liz, the short one who got told she looks 17 and has creepy eyes, wrapped up their first week of teaching!! Unfortunately, it did not end injury-less just like every other northern project blog…. Interested? Keep reading… As was stated in our earlier post, this week was physical health week featuring Liz doing the seizuring robot (hip hop class). We […]

Pickle Lake: Our Second Week!

Hi Everyone!  It has been another wonderful week at Crolancia. Our emphasis was on Nutrition and Physical Health at school and we were able to discuss subjects such as food labels, macronutrients, and food marketing with the 4,5 and 6,7,8 classes. It was very fulfilling to use our personal academic experiences in both psychological studies and nutrition trends to enhance the class discussions. Both classes enjoyed seeing the tooth decay that resulted from immersing a tooth in Pepsi overnight and […]

Mishkeegogamang: Teaching in Missabay!!

It has been such a great week here in Mishkeegogamang! The teachers at Missabay have welcomed us with enthusiasm and we are excited to be working with faculty and students alike for the next 6 weeks. We jumped into things right away, and have been teaching a full schedule across all grades every day. With various activities and games in tow, this week we taught physical health, focusing on Hygiene and Nutrition. The students responded well to our lessons and […]

Week 1 in Webby!

Fabi and Justice here, feeling very guilty that we haven’t blogged since our arrival!  Webequie has been amazing so far – the people are so kind; the children are so enthusiastic and the accommodations are so generous. We arrived on Sunday with all of our luggage including three extremely heavy bags of food supplies. After settling into the comfy homes of two amazing teachers, we kicked into high drive on Monday. We met with as many people as we could […]
