SLEEPOVER!

On Friday evening we had the opportunity to help out one of the elementary school teachers, Sarah, with the first ever grade 6 sleepover, although very little sleeping actually occurred. They started right after school and had a very packed and exciting schedule including soccer, t-shirt dying, a yummy dinner of spaghetti and garlic bread, board games, badminton, movies, charades, cupcake baking, video games, hockey, ice cream sundaes, bracelet making and much more. We arrived just before dinner because we […]

A snowy end to the week

Where has the time gone! We have had a great week here, enjoying some of the warm and sunny weather that came around midweek (it is currently a snow storm and windy, but we enjoyed the sunshine while it lasted!) We’ve been very busy in the classrooms, starting off on Monday where we discussed the effects of smoking with the grade 4’s and 5’s, and covered puberty with the 6/7’s. For Monday’s afterschool program, we were able to run our […]

Past the halfway point?!

Happy Victoria Day weekend everyone! Mother Nature has been keeping us on our toes this weekend. Yesterday we enjoyed clear skies, sunshine and twenty-degree weather. This morning we woke to freezing rain, a winter storm warning and tomorrow’s forecast of snow (20 cm). I guess that’s Northern Ontario for ya! Once again we had a great week at both schools and we’re really starting to get to know the kids. The week started off at Missabay where we were teaching […]

We also had the opportunity to help out with job club and discuss our transition from high school to university with some of the […]

Our First Full Week of Teaching

Greetings family and friends! It’s hard to believe an entire week has gone by since we first arrived. However, we have been keeping busy with teaching and afterschool activities. On Thursdays afterschool we run sports from 3:15-5pm which has turned out to be a lot of fun and brings out a ton of students. Basketball is huge here, the students played it the entire time without showing any interest to switch the game. On Fridays we run crafts afterschool with […]

Time Flies

Wow, we cannot believe week 2 has already come and gone! We were super excited to start our first week of teaching, focusing mostly on nutrition and the importance of physical activity for grades 1-8, while also talking about self-esteem and healthy relationships in the high school. On Monday we were in the grade 4, 5, 6/7, and 8 classrooms discussing nutrition- they loved watching videos about what NHL athletes eat in a day! We were also given the opportunity […]

First full week of teaching!

Another busy week for the books! We were at Missabay on Monday introducing ourselves to each of the classrooms, getting more and more excited to get to know the kids better. By Tuesday morning we were back helping with breakfast club at Crolancia, excited for our first full day of teaching. This week at Crolancia we worked on self-esteem with the 4/5/6’s and started building our wall of self-esteem, each brick represents something the students feel confident about, or a […]

Where did the first week go?!

Long time no blog! It’s been a busy week (and I’m sure it will only get busier)- here’s a recap of our first week here in Pickle Lake!! Monday morning was…emotional. We were so excited to pick up our final supplies, get to Pickle Lake and meet everyone, but sad to say goodbye to the Web girls, uncertain whether we had everything we needed and there was also the concern about whether their questionably heavy hockey bag of food would […]

Breaking the Ice

Helloooo readers! The first week of teaching has come to a close and we have learned so much! Highlights of the first week include talking to various community members, teaching QHO’s first lessons at Deh Gah, beautiful sunsets and doing fun workouts!  Since our last update we went to the Health Centre to speak with the mental health and addictions counselor and Social Workers, who provided us with loads of valuable information and teaching resources! Because of these conversations, we will […]
