Tobogganing, running, yoga, hockey, ping pong… and more!

1/3 of the way done! We can’t believe that another week has flown by here in Salluit. And boy, has it been a busy one! We have had a full week of teaching at the high school, and all of our lessons have gone very well so far. The main topics that we taught this week included smoking (the health consequences of smoking and how to quit), safe alcohol consumption, leadership, bullying issues and how to solve them, and healthy […]

Another Fun-Filled Week!

This week was super busy and super fun; filled with teaching, playing, and learning. Our first full teaching day at Missabay was Tuesday, and we saw almost all of the classes. We introduced ourselves and did some stretching. Below is a gorgeous photo we took from just outside the back door at Missabay. Other lessons taught this week at both schools included hand washing, team work, physical activity, nutrition, and alcohol safety. A highlight in our JK/SK and 1/2 classes […]

#Views from the 8 (6) 7

ᐊᐃᓐᖓᐃ (Hello!) So much has happened during our first week of teaching! After meeting Lanny McDonald and seeing the Stanley Cup on Friday, we had the opportunity to walk to some of the nearby icebergs on Saturday with one of the teachers from the school. Ryan had a great time sliding down the back of it (but Sarah did not want a concussion…so she did not partake). They were #blessed. We also had a meeting with a nurse from the health centre […]

Week One in the Classroom Complete!

We have officially completed our first week of teaching! Last week, before getting into the classrooms we were able to continue to learn about and experience more of the local culture within Webequie. Last Friday, we were able to attend a school picnic and get to know the kids and teachers better before our first day in the classes. Throughout the week, we played LOTS of fun games of tag and floor hockey with the students and we were even […]

So much to do! So much to see!

Phew! Just got back from an exhausting first night volunteering at the Friendship Centre, the local community centre. For the rest of our time in Fort Providence we have offered to volunteer weekly at the Friendship Centre, and we are looking forward to hanging out with the students outside the classroom! Since it’s Mental Health Awareness Week in the community, we ran a Youth Self Care night, which included bracelet making, crafts and manicures! We had tons of energy and […]

Week One.. Already??

We can’t believe that we have already been here for almost a week! Our schedule has been jam-packed with activities so far, and we have been have been overwhelmed by the kindness and assistance received from teachers and members of the community. When we arrived in Pickle Lake on Tuesday QHO’s long-time contact, Lucie, met us just outside of town. She took us for a tour of Pickle Lake in her car and filled us in on everything we needed […]

We love it here!

Week 1 in Salluit is done! It has been an eventful and fun week! Besides Steph being very sick for a few of days, the week went really well! Sunday was such a beautiful day, we decided to go on a hike up a mountain to the cross (a landmark in Salluit).   On Monday, we spent the day at Ikusik, the high school (which actually encompasses grades 4 through 12). We introduced ourselves to all of the teachers, met […]

We’ve Arrived!

We have officially arrived in Webequie! We had some technical difficulties getting internet access but now our blog is ready to go! 🙂 After two long days in our van on the road with the girls heading to Pickle Lake/Mishkeegogamang, we flew out to Webequie at 7:30am on Tueseday. The beautiful scenery and exciting chats about Initiative made the 19 hours of driving very enjoyable! We stopped for a night in Sudbury along the way (thanks Cait and Nate for […]

Suitcases, Snowstorms, and Lord Stanley’s Mug

Greetings loved ones…. lets take a journey (*Yes, this a California Gurls reference*) The first first few days of our adventure have been a whirlwind, with so many new faces welcoming us to our new home Pond Inlet. It all began with a 4am wakeup on April 26th, which saw us struggling as we packed our suitcases to the brim with food and warm clothing. We then made the journey from Kingston to Ottawa (thank you to Ryan’s parents, bless). […]

Warm welcomes

Can’t believe it’s almost been a week in Fort Providence!! After our lovely overnight stay and a day of sight-seeing on our own in Yellowknife, we did our big grocery run before getting picked up by Lois, the Principal of Deh Gah Elementary and Secondary School. Lois is recognized and respected member of the community with lots of information to share about Fort Providence and the surrounding communities during our 3 hour drive. When we arrived at our new home, we were surprised with a generous box of groceries from the […]
