Queen's Health Outreach
“Collaborating with local and international communities to work towards sustainable opportunities for youth engagement, leadership, and health education.”
As an organization, our goal is to promote health and inspire confidence, self-esteem, and self-efficacy within the youth of the communities in which we work.
Who are we?
Queen’s Health Outreach (QHO) is a student-run volunteer organization that strives to promote health through needs-based peer-to-peer education initiatives locally, nationally and internationally. QHO is the largest student-run registered charitable organization at Queen’s University. We are comprised of over 80 members, including 28 Executive Members, 46 Peer Educators and 6 Interns. QHO was established in 1988 and now has five different initiatives that work with various schools and community groups within Kingston ON, northern Canada, Belize, Guyana, and Kenya.
What do we do?
Each year, students at Queen’s University are hired and trained as Peer Educators to implement health education and community outreach programming in multiple elementary schools, high schools and community groups within our 5 different locations. As Peer Educators, students undergo comprehensive training throughout October to April on many areas of study that include effective teaching strategies, lesson planning, cultural safety, community development, and learning about the local cultures and communities in which they will be working in. Peer Educators tailor lesson plans and community programming to adhere to the specific needs and wants of the local community by partnering with like-minded organizations and community members. We work with our partners to base all material on locally relevant and pressing health issues and incorporate the local culture. Our goal is to continually reassess the needs of each community we visit, and to implement self-sustaining health programs that will continue within the communities once we have left.
