Smoothie Moustaches, Girl Empowerment and Birthday Celebrations

And just like that, we have had another incredible week in Fort Good Hope! We can’t believe we have already been here for 3 weeks and are dreading saying goodbyes. But for now, we will share our adventures inside and outside the classrooms of CTS. Our energetic and adorable kindergarten class loved our lessons on emotions and nutrition. They drew beautiful pictures of what made them happy, most including colourful rainbows, family and one moon heart (a very cute new […]

Bannock, Bananas, Beading!

What a week it has been! We have absolutely loved getting into the classroom to begin facilitating lessons on different health topics and getting to know each classroom. The kindergarten class is full of energy and excitement, always ready to play a game, have a dance party or read a story. We had an introduction lesson full of fun games and a hygiene lesson with glitter hands. We spent the most time with the adorable grade ½ class with an […]

Snowstorms and Cancelled Flights and Ice Cream, Oh My!

Hello everyone and welcome to our blog! We are so incredibly excited to collaborate with the community of Fort Good Hope, NWT for the first official summer initiative with QHO. We are finally sitting together in the wolf inspired room in Embleton House, run by the lovely Faith and Ken, in Yellowknife. When we say finally, we really mean finally! It has been a stressful few days with rerouted flights because of a snowstorm. A huge shout-out to my parents […]

The End of A New Beginning

Hello again loyal blog followers, We are sad to say that it is our last blog post here in Fort Good Hope! We have had an amazing week, filled with opportunities to both teach and learn. We spent the first part of the week teaching about healthy relationships, consent, stress, anxiety and nutrition. A lot of the students have asked us about stress and anxiety, and other community members have placed emphasis on teaching youth how to recognize and cope with […]

Week 3: Sleep Lessons and Volleyball

Welcome back to our blog!!! This week we started off in the classrooms teaching about sleep benefits, and tips to get a better nights sleep. This was the most requested topic from our student surveys and one that adults stressed to us as well! It’s nearly 24 hours of sunlight here right now, so you can imagine how easy it is to stay up all hours of the night without darkness telling your body it’s time to shut down. We […]

The Pancake King of Fort Good Hope

Welcome back to our blog and Happy Mother’s Day! This morning we started bright and early making pancakes for the Mother’s Day breakfast at the community band hall. John is apparently really good at making pancakes (or as good as one can be at making pancakes…) and so he insisted on being called the Pancake King. Unfortunately some of the flippers were melting on the hot griddle so we were using large metal knives to flip the pancakes. We also got the […]

Making Friends and Petting Dogs in FGH

Hey everyone, It’s the end of our first week of our expansion initiative here in Fort Good Hope, where we are working to create a solid partnership between QHO and the community for years to come! We spent our week meeting with prominent members of the community such as the Band Council, Nurses, RCMP Officers, Community Health Representatives, and teachers. We are in the process of completing a community profile so that our health program can be as needs-based as […]

Lots of Flights and Sleepy Nights

Hello everyone! After 2 days, 4 flights and a lot of dried mangos, we have arrived in Fort Good Hope! Huge shout out to John’s mom for driving us to the airport at 6am. We stayed overnight in the city of Yellowknife and loaded up on groceries before heading on a charter plane to our final destination. The principal of Chief T’Selehye School welcomed us at the airport, and another teacher made us pizza from the school’s pizza and bagel […]
