Time Flies

Wow, we cannot believe week 2 has already come and gone! We were super excited to start our first week of teaching, focusing mostly on nutrition and the importance of physical activity for grades 1-8, while also talking about self-esteem and healthy relationships in the high school. On Monday we were in the grade 4, 5, 6/7, and 8 classrooms discussing nutrition- they loved watching videos about what NHL athletes eat in a day! We were also given the opportunity […]

Week 1 in the books!

Greetings from Webequie! After a bittersweet goodbye to John and Laura, we began our final leg of the journey and boarded our plane to Webequie. We can’t wait to her all about the great things they experience in Pickle/Mish! We stopped in Kasabonika Lake, then in Souix Lookout, and finally landed at the Webequie airport, where we were greeted by our pickup. We couldn’t keep our eyes off the beautiful landscape during the flight! After moving our things into our accommodations the […]

The Road to Web!

Greetings from Thunder Bay! After a long day and a half of travels, including a lovely stay with the Lapp family in Huntsville, we have made it safely to Thunder Bay! The Lapps generously let us spend the night at their lovely home in Huntsville and made a delicious dinner, before we headed off at 7 AM yesterday morning. The drive was beautiful, we even saw a moose! With a few stops along including the giant nickel in Sudbury, lunch in […]

In the Web

Hello from the Web!   The past few weeks have been EVER eventful, here’s just a few highlights:   Side note, the kids here use “EVER” a lot: While touching (and tugging!!) Amy’s hair: “Ever long and curly” When patting Kersh’s hair: “Oooo ever fluffy” The few times we showed up a few mins late to class: “Ever late!!!!” That one time we showed up early: “WOW ever early!”   With the weather becoming ever nice, the kids have been […]

Cultural Week (aka Bannock Appreciation Week)

Hello from Webequie! We’ve just wrapped up our first official week of teaching here at Simon Jacob Memorial Education Centre (SJMEC). This week’s focus was on leadership and communication, with a side of hockey and arts&crafts every 3:30-4:30pm. Rather than lecture on and on about what makes a great leader or the best ways to communicate, we decided to engage our students with activities that fostered communication and provided them with leadership opportunities. It’s hard to believe we’ve already finished […]

Webequie

Hello from Webequie! Our journey began in Toronto, where we met up at Pearson International Airport and flew out to beautiful Thunder Bay (home of our ever fabulous co-director, Fab!) We checked in at the Airlane hotel, then headed straight to the nearest grocery store to stock up on much needed groceries to bring up north. The hotel also offered complementary breakfast, which we eagerly accepted. Around noon, we headed over to the airport, bags in tow, eager as can […]

Life’s a beach…Adam Beach!!!!

Figured we would post an update since we have had a very exciting week. After a long weekend which involved some fishing (on ice and in a t shirt!), campfires, sunshine and seeing the Northern Lights stretched out across the sky, it was eventually time to put the sunglasses away and get down to business. This week we moved on from sexual health to substance abuse, a much tougher topic to teach about but still very important. We taught about […]

Week 2.5 in Webequie

Hey folks, So another eventful week up here in Webequie, and although the Leafs despicable loss put a damper on things and remains a sore spot we were still able to have an alright time (mostly due to the hilarity of our puberty lessons as well as the warm weather). The grade 7/8’s were on a cultural exchange to Ottawa and as a result we got to spend lots of time with the younger grades to Kat’s delight. Booked solid […]
