And we’re off!

Hello from JJ and Carly! Welcome to our blog! After a busy morning at Pearson airport we have finally made it Thunder Bay and are currently awaiting our final flight. We are so excited to get to Webequie and cannot wait to meet everyone and to get settled in the community. We will be updating this blog with our experiences over the next 5 1/2 weeks! Thank you to all of our friends and family for their support over the […]

Goodbye for now Webequie!

Our last half-week in Webequie was absolutely amazing! We could not have asked for a better way to wrap up our lessons and to say our final goodbyes. On Monday, we were able to teach lessons about goal setting and how to set SMART goals. In our high school classes on Monday and Tuesday we taught lessons about mental health, stigma around mental illness and the importance of self-care. The students set some great goals in their lives and made […]

Fairs and Campfires! – Week #4

Victoria day in Webequie sure was a blast despite the rainy weather! Unfortunately we weren’t able to join in on the treasure hunt and cookout that the community had put on together in the afternnon, but we were able to join in on the festivities during the night, which included an all-ages dance! We were very impressed by the talent of people of all ages and the shuffling skills that even the kindergarteners seemed to have mastered! Many of the […]

Summer Has Arrived in Webequie!

What a busy week we had in Webequie! A week filled with laughter, beautiful weather, and a lot of time in the classrooms! Webequie had a snowstorm last weekend and was 28 degrees and sunny today! We went into the week not knowing what to expect when beginning our lessons on puberty and sexual health, but we were excited to see how the students would react to the topics we were planning on teaching! We started off by teaching grades […]

Beading, Bananas and Bonding, OH MY!

Halfway through initiative already?! Where has the time gone?? Last weekend we hosted our very first community event which was a great success! The kids enjoyed having the afternoon to hang out with us while watching “Inside Out”, eating popcorn and learning about mental health. The film struck up some important conversations between us and the students, especially among the younger children. We got into the school on Monday feeling eager to begin the busy week ahead of us! This […]

Week One in the Classroom Complete!

We have officially completed our first week of teaching! Last week, before getting into the classrooms we were able to continue to learn about and experience more of the local culture within Webequie. Last Friday, we were able to attend a school picnic and get to know the kids and teachers better before our first day in the classes. Throughout the week, we played LOTS of fun games of tag and floor hockey with the students and we were even […]

We’ve Arrived!

We have officially arrived in Webequie! We had some technical difficulties getting internet access but now our blog is ready to go! 🙂 After two long days in our van on the road with the girls heading to Pickle Lake/Mishkeegogamang, we flew out to Webequie at 7:30am on Tueseday. The beautiful scenery and exciting chats about Initiative made the 19 hours of driving very enjoyable! We stopped for a night in Sudbury along the way (thanks Cait and Nate for […]

That’s a Wrap!

We could not have asked for a better last week here in Webequie! How the time has flown by. After a fun last weekend, we were excited to get back into the classrooms and back with the kids. For our final week, we focused on mental health, anger and stress management, self-esteem, leadership and teamwork, and finished off with goal setting. We were blessed with beautiful weather earlier in the week and often went outside for some of our final classes […]

Only 1 more week?!

We can’t believe we are about to start our last week here! This past week has been a blast. After a snowy Victoria Day Monday spent indoors, we were ready to get back in the classrooms. On Tuesday we continued with substance abuse and smoking lessons with the grade 6/7’s, and focused on sexual health with the grade 8’s. That evening, we had dinner with past QHO Co-Director, Northern PD and Webequie PE, Fabi! She has so many great ideas- we […]

A snowy end to the week

Where has the time gone! We have had a great week here, enjoying some of the warm and sunny weather that came around midweek (it is currently a snow storm and windy, but we enjoyed the sunshine while it lasted!) We’ve been very busy in the classrooms, starting off on Monday where we discussed the effects of smoking with the grade 4’s and 5’s, and covered puberty with the 6/7’s. For Monday’s afterschool program, we were able to run our […]
