Week Two: Our Salluit Adventure

It is the end of our second week here in snowy Salluit and we are feeling both accomplished and enthusiastic about how teaching went this week. Throughout the past eight days of teaching we have now learned which classes require A LOT of activities to keep them engaged (ahem grade seven, boys), which ones love our colourful and animated picture examples and the classes that benefit most from casual, laid-back discussions. This week at Ikusik School we covered mental health […]

Week 1: Mission Accomplished

A bird’s eye view of our new community! As the school day comes to a close here in Salluit, we have officially finished our first school week at Ikusik and Piguirvik School. As a result of the warm and welcoming teachers, community members and energetic students we feel like we have been here for much longer. Our days have been filled with meeting new and friendly faces, including the head nurses at the nursing station and the workers at Sapummivik, […]

First 24 hours in Salluit!

Hello! Bonjour! WE HAVE ARRIVED! We flew into the Salluit airport yesterday after overcoming the fear of over weight bags, but we did it! (Our carry-ons may or may not have been placed in cargo…) anyways it was a great trip and its amazing how things change so quickly without even going too far! Due to our plane delay leaving Montreal, we arrived about 45 min late into the airport which created some confusion for the pick up that we […]

PPD (Pt 2)

We flew out of Salluit 16 days ago, and it has been 15 and a half days since we started missing it. It is hard to believe such an incredible experience is over, and while 46 days does not seem like a long time in the grand scheme of things, it is one we will never forget. It was a priviledge to work with and get to know the students, teachers, elders, healthcare workers and community members of this beautiful community. […]

Post-project denial (Pt 1)

After six and a half weeks that will never be forgotten, new friends and a mountain of life lessons, Blizabeth’s adventure has ended, and after splitting up in Montreal they are back to being boring ol’ Blake and Liz. (Blizabeth—> Bl-izabeth—–> Blake + Elizabeth) But due to our tardiness on the blogisphere, you haven’t been updated on our last week yet! Unfortunately, our last week in Salluit was also exam time at Ikusik, so we didn’t get a chance to […]

Time to Disco!

John Travolta and [insert famous female disco icon] here, with updates on Salluit! Last night was our disco where we had a chance to boogie down with some of the students from Ikusik and Blake had a chance to break the world record for most piggy backs in one night! Never has there been such a repeat of Blake and Liz’s (very minimal number of) dance moves. Blake also discovered his new-found talent; THE LIMBO! Now on to the rest […]

Classic Qalunak: Showing up underdressed

WE WENT OUT ON THE LAND TODAY!!! SOOOOO AWWEEESSOOOMMEEE!!! But before we get to that, let’s talk about the rest of our jam packed, also very exciting week. We started off our week with our first Girls’ Night (ft. Blake) of the trip! We had a ton of fun making, decorating and eating (obviously) cupcakes, making bracelets and doing hair! Unfortunately, we did not have a full make-up kit, so the QHO Northern tradition of giving the males on the […]

FOR FREE?!?!?!

The Salluit crew is back from their first hike in Salluit! Wowee the views are gorgeous! If only one of us had any photography skills then you would get to see what we saw… Nevertheless we’re going to make you look at our poorly photographed landscapes, so you can try to see the beauty beyond the blurry! This week was Sexual health week! We spent our week talking about Sex, Pregnancy, Menstruation, Puberty, Contraception, and Healthy Relationships. The kids have […]

Gaining 20 pounds on bannock

Gosh golly the Salluit crew has been a couple of busy caribou! (Is that the expression?) SO MUCH HOCKEY! SO MUCH FUN! We’ve been out of the bloggosphere for a few days, so this is going to be a long one! Let’s get to it! (Encore, le fran├žais est en bas) Friday, Ikusik`s guidance consellor Mary was nice enough to take us to the NV (the municipal building in Salluit) and translate our meeting with the Mayor into Inuktitut. We […]
