Who knew you could do so much in a week?! :)

The Monday of this week was Victoria Day, which means no school! With our free day we decided to go on a hike up to the highest mountain point overlooking Salluit, with some of the teachers from school. Though it was extremely windy, the view from the top was spectacular! At our last run club meet, we had asked students whether they wanted to meet on this Monday for our next run club even though it was a holiday. And […]

Tobogganing, running, yoga, hockey, ping pong… and more!

1/3 of the way done! We can’t believe that another week has flown by here in Salluit. And boy, has it been a busy one! We have had a full week of teaching at the high school, and all of our lessons have gone very well so far. The main topics that we taught this week included smoking (the health consequences of smoking and how to quit), safe alcohol consumption, leadership, bullying issues and how to solve them, and healthy […]

We love it here!

Week 1 in Salluit is done! It has been an eventful and fun week! Besides Steph being very sick for a few of days, the week went really well! Sunday was such a beautiful day, we decided to go on a hike up a mountain to the cross (a landmark in Salluit).   On Monday, we spent the day at Ikusik, the high school (which actually encompasses grades 4 through 12). We introduced ourselves to all of the teachers, met […]

Nous sommes arrivées! (We have arrived!)

We made it to the beautiful town of Salluit! Our journey here went smoothly – despite almost missing our flight when we temporarily got off the plane at a pit-stop, AND then almost getting on the wrong plane at our lay-over airport, AND the Salluit wind having delayed flights for the last 3 days until our very flight yesterday afternoon – somehow, everything worked out perfectly in our favour, and we arrived safe and sound without any glitches. In the last […]

Wait what? Week 3 already?

Holy guacamole, it’s week three already?! This week, we were hard at work continuing our lessons on Physical Health and Mental Health, with a special focus on  substances use and abuse including cigarettes, drugs, inhalant and alcohol, as well a bullying! We started off the week with some great lessons on bullying in the primary classes. By now, we’ve become quite well acquainted with the students at Ikusik, who simply love laughing with us and, of course, at us, both during our lessons and […]

First Week Teaching!

Hey everyone! Holy moly did we have a busy week! The week began with some very important introductions. We used our first Monday off to get acquainted with many important community members: from nurses at the nursing station, to Dean from the boys rehab centre (where we will be teaching every Friday), to the Mayor of Salluit! Everyone was very welcoming and had great advice and insight on how to tailor our health lessons to the specific needs of the […]

We (finally) made it to Salluit!

After days of travelling, a total number of 10 take-offs, we have finally arrived in Salluit and we could not be happier! As many of you may know by now, bad weather and high winds prevented us from landing in Salluit on the 27th, and then again on the 28th. Although it was a wee bit inconvenient, we were far from being “stranded.” In fact, we’d like to think these two days allowed us to get a better idea of the “North” […]
