Week 5 – Ending with a Bang!

Saturday was a very special day for the community of Salluit; graduation day! We were so eager to join the day long festivities celebrating the hard work of the 9 all female graduates. We got to the school in the morning to help the kitchen team. Ikusik school sure knows how to make a good feast. We were chopping fruit and veggies, slicing turkeys and hams and icing cupcakes. In the early afternoon, we joined the graduates as they got […]

Week Four… We Want More!

Week 4 started off with the long weekend – we used this time to relax, get outside, learn more about the culture and spend time with our new friends of the Salluit community. We decided to stay active and take some of our little neighbours for a hike. Little did we know these kiddos would be our tour guides and lead us to a whole new (and higher!) part of the mountain – the view was magical! We were also […]

Sunsets and Soccer Baseball in Salluit

Week three brought many more health discussions, after school activities and beautiful sunsets. As another fun and productive week passes we look forward to sharing with you some of our stories. This week at Pigurivik we focused our lessons on bullying, how to recognize it and how to effectively respond. We finished our lessons off with an anti- bullying pledge that the students eagerly signed. The pledges are hanging in the school lobby and the students and staff are proud […]

Welcome to Salluit: the Land of Mountains, Dogs and Beautiful Culture!

With a quick overnight stay in Puvirnituq (which is so beautiful by the way!!), we made it to Salluit on Monday morning. We were instantly amazed by the beautiful geography in Salluit – the mountains, blue skies, beautiful sunsets (Kathryn’s fav… if you know, you know) and fresh air. We are already taking full advantage of the beautiful running routes in Salluit… with some pretty heavy duty hill training that is kicking our butts! The community in Salluit has been […]

Week 5 = cooking marathon !!

Hello and welcome back! This past week was our final full week of classes and we truly can’t believe it. It feels like only yesterday that we were getting lost finding grocery stores and consistently falling into large snow banks (although let’s be real, that still happens daily). This week’s lessons focused on bullying and building healthy friendships with our primary students, and suicide prevention and coping strategies with our older students. The younger students were amazing in talking about […]

Week 4!!

Hello all!! It’s your Sal Pals back and ready to chat about our wild week! In the classes this week, we talked all about smoking and substance abuse. With our younger students, we focused on what goes in a cigarette, activities that we can do instead of smoking, and the idea of peer pressure. We loved hearing all of the fun activities that students liked to do with their friends and family, and they just keep impressing us with their […]
