Camping & Kids & Craziness

Oops, we were so busy having fun that we forgot to post a blog! This past week was filled with tons of adventures. We had Puberty and Safe Sex week with our older classes, with discussions on growing up, consent, safe sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity. They listened super attentively and had the chance to ask any questions they wanted to. Younger students that had missed these lessons earlier, learned about healthy eating and tooth brushing. Our after school […]

Time flies when you’re having fun! (Spoiler: we are!)

What an exciting week! Our classroom lessons were centred on mental health for all classes. For older students, this meant learning about what mental health is, an overview of mental illness, and a thorough discussion of coping strategies.Younger students discussed bullying. Tuesday night was Girls’ Night at Missabay! So much fun! We played basketball and the balloon game, ate breakfast for supper, decorated cupcakes, and painted nails. The girls all seemed to have a blast! Thank you to Tommy, […]

Soccer, Slumber Parties, and Snow!

We truly cannot believe that we have already reached the halfway point in our initiative! Time really does fly when you’re having fun. When we awoke on Friday, we were surprised to find that winter had returned – so much snow! This week, we taught 3 days at Missabay and 2 at Crolancia. Our lessons focused on alcohol and drugs, healthy relationships, consent, and personal hygiene. The kids knock on our door almost every day now, so we have been playing tons […]

Another Fun-Filled Week!

This week was super busy and super fun; filled with teaching, playing, and learning. Our first full teaching day at Missabay was Tuesday, and we saw almost all of the classes. We introduced ourselves and did some stretching. Below is a gorgeous photo we took from just outside the back door at Missabay. Other lessons taught this week at both schools included hand washing, team work, physical activity, nutrition, and alcohol safety. A highlight in our JK/SK and 1/2 classes […]

Week One.. Already??

We can’t believe that we have already been here for almost a week! Our schedule has been jam-packed with activities so far, and we have been have been overwhelmed by the kindness and assistance received from teachers and members of the community. When we arrived in Pickle Lake on Tuesday QHO’s long-time contact, Lucie, met us just outside of town. She took us for a tour of Pickle Lake in her car and filled us in on everything we needed […]

As an unforgettable Crolancia student might say “…I think we’re done!”

Our final week was unbelievable! We were able to join a cultural day with the Native Studies classes at Crolancia on Monday afternoon. We learned how to distinguish the tracks of different small game as well as the Ojibway words for the animals. The students also caught a ton of fish! Adventure is out there, and we’ve found it in Pickle Lake!

Hello everyone!! Another week, another adventure! On Monday we were at Missabay teaching physical activity, healthy relationships, and teaching soccer skills at the request of one of the teachers. After school we headed to the rec center for several hours of fun! What started as a session of bubbles and soccer in the parking lot quickly transformed into hours of hockey and crafts inside! We really enjoyed spending time with the kids outside of the classroom…and they really enjoyed playing […]

More Than Half Way Done

Happy Tuesday everyone! Our holiday Monday brought us 15cm of snow along with some quiet time indoors. The Pickle Lake weather always keeps us guessing seeing how we got some nice sunburns two days prior during a long day of fishing. Feeling very deprived of the kids we headed to Crolancia on Tuesday to start the teaching week. Active living would be the main focus of the week for the Kindergarten class as well as the 1/2/3 class. The 4/5/6 […]
