Weeks 5 & 6 in Fort Prov: Two Weeks of Fun Wrapped Up Into One!

If there is one thing we have learned during our time if Fort Providence, it is to expect the unexpected! Our plans for Week 5 were changed up when the boat trip we were supposed to be attending was sadly cancelled due to the ice still moving up the Mackenzie from Great Slave Lake. While we would have loved to experience such a special trip with our students and the opportunity to learn more about where and how the […]

Mahsi Cho Fort Good Hope

We have absolutely loved our time in Fort Good Hope and will always cherish the memories we made, relationships we built and lessons we learned from our favourite community. It was an amazing experience and we can’t believe how quickly the time has gone by. We are both excited and sad to share our last blog post of our initiative with the stories from this past week. On Monday, there was no school so we had a wonderful day on […]

Week 5 – Ending with a Bang!

Saturday was a very special day for the community of Salluit; graduation day! We were so eager to join the day long festivities celebrating the hard work of the 9 all female graduates. We got to the school in the morning to help the kitchen team. Ikusik school sure knows how to make a good feast. We were chopping fruit and veggies, slicing turkeys and hams and icing cupcakes. In the early afternoon, we joined the graduates as they got […]

WEEK 5 IN WEB: What a wonderful week!

We can’t believe we’re already writing about our final week of teaching, how the time has flown!!! This week we really took the time to appreciate each moment, play games in each lesson and we had such a blast!  It was a busy week for the students at Simon Jacob Memorial Education Center (SJMEC) as most of them had to take either the EQAO test or the CAT 4 standardized test. Despite this, we are so grateful we still had […]

Week 4 in Fort Prov: Bison, Bon Fires, and Beautiful Waterfalls!

It has been another busy week to wrap up our first month here in Fort Providence! We started the week off with a relaxing and productive Victoria Day at home, before diving into Spring Camp with the K-1s on Tuesday. Spring Camp was full of hide and seek, hair braiding, and paper planes this week! Highlights included teaching the students Stella Ella Ola/Stella Stella Ola, which proved to be a point of contention – after some hard-hitting research Wikipedia says […]

Boys Just Wanna Have Fun and Nature is a Girl’s Best Friend

We have had the most amazing week and are so excited to share our stories!!! On Monday there was no school because it was the long weekend. We had the opportunity to hike with Mat and Leslie, staff at CTS, to Old Baldy, our favourite look out spot. With our 3 extra furry adventure buddies, we took to the trails behind Old Baldy with gorgeous views of the trees and Mackenzie Mountains in the distance. Sophie definitely made some new […]

WEEK 4 IN WEB: Career Fair & Outdoor games

Our week 4 began with a relaxing and warm weathered long weekend! On Saturday evening we were invited by two of the high school teachers for dinner (shout out to Jason and Krystyna for the best veggie chili!) and we loved getting to hear about their experiences and perspectives as teachers in the community. After dinner we were welcomed home by a group of our students who were eager for us to join them in some outdoor activities! We had […]

Week Four… We Want More!

Week 4 started off with the long weekend – we used this time to relax, get outside, learn more about the culture and spend time with our new friends of the Salluit community. We decided to stay active and take some of our little neighbours for a hike. Little did we know these kiddos would be our tour guides and lead us to a whole new (and higher!) part of the mountain – the view was magical! We were also […]

Week 3 in Fort Prov: Eat, Sleep, Bead, REPEAT

For our third week in Fort Providence, we had a wonderful balance of teaching in the classroom and spending time at Spring Camp. We started our week off talking about sleep and hygiene with the K-1, 2-3, and 4-5 classes. The grade 4-5s had so many awesome questions regarding sleep, especially in relation to how sleep is affected by sugar and healthy eating! We were excited that we already had a nutrition lesson up our sleeves for Friday, where we […]

Smoothie Moustaches, Girl Empowerment and Birthday Celebrations

And just like that, we have had another incredible week in Fort Good Hope! We can’t believe we have already been here for 3 weeks and are dreading saying goodbyes. But for now, we will share our adventures inside and outside the classrooms of CTS. Our energetic and adorable kindergarten class loved our lessons on emotions and nutrition. They drew beautiful pictures of what made them happy, most including colourful rainbows, family and one moon heart (a very cute new […]
